How does this compare to last year? It looks similar to what I remember and I have that already in my GPS. Also will Cat 1 and 2 do the same course for all laps? I think last year lap two had an early downhill that wasn’t on lap one. Thanks for publishing this so early!

Glad you are coming back to race again this year! We are using some of the same trails as last year however, you will find that you will ride in the opposite direction on some of the same trails. There will not be a shortened or modified start lap for the adult racers. All laps will be the same. The only shortened laps are for the 12 and under and kids divisions. Have fun and good luck!

The course is awesome, it is going to be painful but that is expected with Waco. I got to pre-ride this weekend and Paul happened to be at the park with a mutual friend so we got a tour guide. I am really looking forward to this race, although I fear I may not be able to walk the next day!!

Kim- Do you know how much last year’s course was? I only got 922 feet climbing per lap on the new course but the Garmin was not getting good reads in the trees.

I don’t ride with a Garmin so I’m not sure how it compares to last year’s total ft of climbing per lap but I would guess it’s probably pretty close since we added more climbing from Sidewinder/CA56 sections, but took out the long finishing road climb from the Mix Master to Lover’s Leap. The heavy tree canopy and cliffs make a lot of GPS units lose signal from time to time so it may have missed some sections.

Here’s some course figures via the awesome Waco Bike Club Prez:

(Per Lap Approximates) Last year’s laps were a little funky with the first lap being different if I recall correctly.
2010 last year 6.64 miles, total climbing 756 ft. total descent 760 ft.
2011 this year 7.86 miles ,total climbing 889 ft. total descent 889 ft
I think the climbing and descent is a little bit off due to the elevation correction using DEM. I believe the reality is about 100 feet off –should be around 860 last year and right about 1000 this year. With better software Matt came up with about 1015 for this year I think. Distance is right on though

how many miles is each lap for the Cat 1 racer??

  3. brianplemons says:

If I do the 3 lap category can I use my moped? Other wise I might pass out…

    • Paul says:

      Brian,

As the course is certainly challenging do not underestimate the potential of the human body to experience both pain and joy all at the same time.

      Cheers!!

  4. Shawn says:

Which day(s) do the races for each category occur?
    Thanks

  5. Karlos says:

Will the course be better marked for preriding before the race? Even with the map and occassional pink ribbon, it wasn’t easy to follow and required constant stopping and checking to find which way to turn. I know of at least one section where I didn’t take the correct route. Maybe some arrows at each intersection would be better?

    • Kim says: (Author)

The pink ribbons you followed were not marking the Fallout course. They were marking a route for a trail running event this weekend. The Fallout will be pre-marked using the standard cardstock colored arrows. Due to park restrictions the course can’t be marked weeks in advance. Just like in previous years the course will be heavily marked with arrows, tape, and sno fencing when necessary for the race weekend. Yes, there are a lot of turns so it’s easy to get off track.

  6. Jeff says:

Is there an actual flyer for this event?

  7. jamie says:

    Will Camping be available.??
I hear all the hotels are filled up for Homecoming Weekend at Baylor.
    Thanks

    • Kim says: (Author)

Yes, you can camp Saturday night at the venue. It’s very primative, no water or electricity–just camping in a grassy open field. There are restrooms close but no showers. Camping is not normally allowed in the park but special permission has been given for this event.

  8. Mike P says:

What is the race distance for the 11-12 year old boys and the cat3 mens groups?

  9. DJ says:

How many laps will the Cat3 Class be doing?

  10. Todd says:

Whats the course like? Smooth and tacky, rough and rocky? Is it technical or pretty “flowy”? I haven’t been able to find any info for the kind of terrain. THANKS!

    • Kim says: (Author)

The course has a little bit of everything. Some parts are smooth and twisty, while others have fast descents. Lots of power climbing, smaller rocks–not like big drop off rocks in the hill country but loose ones that keep you agile. It’s been dry so some parts are loose but for the most part it’s all narrow single track that flows well. Bring you lungs, you will need them from all the climbs and accelerations outta turns. Most locals ride 29ers with tubeless for extra grip.

    • ianmoore says:

A mixture of all of the above, some climbing.

  11. Todd says:

I’d like to make the jump to Cat 2, but I’ve heard Waco is not the best place to do it. Judging by finishing order @ other races (Cat 3) I will be near the bottom in 2. So… my question is this… is there a time limit? I’m guessing I can do it in 2:15ish. Never been to Waco before, and can’t pre-ride, so any advice is appreciated!

  12. Paul says:

    Todd,
Making the jump to Cat 2 is more about your endurance level. My experience with CAT 3 was that it is a sprint from start to finish. There is not an official “time limit” on CAT 2 however, we will be starting the PSE class promptly at 11:00am so if you are still on course at 11:00 there is a slight possibility that they could catch you.
    Hope this helps.

  13. Lisa says:

Are the Pro/Open Women doing 3 laps also?
